Halloween '08: "NOT a turtle!"
Identity Crisis. She took her Halloween outing very seriously this year: approach door, nod soberly to lovely man, woman, child, or monster offering treats, acknowledge pets, carefully select from basket, thank host, spin around and oh so quietly but urgently demand that mama or daddy “OPEN” the scored goody. I noticed there seemed to be less unbridled delight expressed this year, as compared to last year’s incredulous look of “somebody gave me CANDY” upon turning from each door. Perhaps it was because each person addressed her as a little Turtle (one of her favorite words) which caused great confusion, when clearly she is a Dragon (as she tried to communicate by roaring frequently and raising her little hands in the sign for ‘monster’): note dragon tail in photos. Or it may have just been a loooong day of napless partying at school and with the lovely Alyse, Kira, and Tess. The darkness and Mardi Gras-like crowds were a bit disorienting, but it was great fun, even though I missed the really great photo ops (with a choice of holding the little dragon’s claw or hanging back to catch the shot, I generally opted for the claw).
There was one notable difference from last year: each “thank you,” “olly-op,” and “NOT turtle” was verbal (signing was a bit difficult, what with the claws and a bag and a fist full of candy corn to manage). I’ll have to take that into consideration next year
