Communication Update from Laurie:
I first need to apologize for not emailing you more often with updates. But I wanted you to know that Li-Li is doing soooo well! Her language is really taking off and I am very pleased with her progress.
We are continuing to use the SPICE and WASP programs to focus on structured listening skills, i.e. vowel and consonant perception. As I hear what Li-Li is producing, it also let’s me hear how this shows up in her articulation patterns.
We are also focusing on building Li-Li’s spoken English vocabulary by presenting basic vocabulary units in a variety of activities. We have done Fall and School words and are now working on clothing vocabulary. Many ASL signs are more general, so Li-Li will benefit from learning the specific names for items. Recently, we have used words like: pajamas, slippers, jacket, sweater, shirt, sneakers, bathing suit, vest, scarf, and gloves and mittens.
Expressively, Li-Li’s sentence length has increased as well as the amount of time that she uses spoken English to express herself. She does continue to use her ASL also, which is great.
Anyway, there’s a quick synopsis of what’s going on. Please let me know if you have questions, comments, thoughts, updates, or just want to say Hi!! Li-Li continues to be such a bright spot in my day!!! Hope you are all doing well. Laurie
