Tone deaf

The wee one has started singing!  That’s not a typo, she started signing a while back, but singing is something new.  Her teachers mentioned that where previously she would follow soundlessly, this past week she’s begun to sing along with the other children (a mixed group of deaf, CI deaf, HOH, and CODAs).  It’s a bi-lingual (ASL and English) / bi-cultural school, so yes, sometimes there’s music! She’s not harmonizing, they explained, but when the little ones all sing ‘twinkle, twinkle, little star’ and BINGO, she warbles along in the right rhythm, although not exactly the melody … or a nearby  key … or, well, for those who know how I sing, it seems that she’s a chip off the old block!

Tonight, while making dinner, John was singing, and suddenly Li-Li joined in. Initially he stopped, startled, and so did she.  But he’s in the kitchen right now,  singing up a storm, old standards, and she’s trilling along (sort of).  It’s comical and wonderful and delightful and a couple of steps off (musically) and riding the melody like a roller coaster.  Lots of glissando — we may have a future Mariah on our hands.   Or if you’ve seen ‘Happy Feet’ you’ll know exactly what she was doing.  I have to get this on tape.

yahoo, awesome isnt it! Amazing what technology can do, I’m sure it’s like a whole new world for her.

Jadies favorite is the “ABC” song. it’s a riot how they make up the words i.e. “L-um, m-mum, PEEEE” for LMNOP, it makes me laugh and smile at the same time!!

Fun!! We enrolled E in a Kindermusik class a couple of months after activation. He just had his last one this Saturday (15wks). He LOVED it. His token singing word is “ba”. My MIL got him a guitar for Cmas and he sits and strums it and sings “ba, ba, ba” like the Kmusik teacher.

Abbie, I watched your amazing activation video all the way through once again and I LOVE your new captioning tool — have got to try that on Li-Li’s “Happy Feet” video. I love these ahah moments - all is quiet and then they really sneak up on you!

Speaking of videos, Aileen, I wish you had seen Li-Li watching in delight as Jadie was rocking out on the phone in your December video! And Oh, those shoes!

Jeannette, you should hear Li-Li on drums, maybe we’ve got the next generation’s Beethoven’s Nightmare in the making. We had some great progress with Ba and Pa a while back but she seems to have backed away from those in the last few weeks. No more “Bye Bye’s” either, these days, which is sad. We’re increasing her speech sessions and I’ve got another mapping coming up in 2 weeks, so I’m hoping that will have a positive effect, though.
