First basketball game: TLC’s Lady Ghosts!

Nearing Li-Li’s 2nd birthday (on February 10!), we have a lot of firsts these days, and yesterday was no exception: we attended our first basketball game and watched the JV Lady Ghosts play against the Rhode Island School for the Deaf!

As Li-Li and I were leaving her class’s building at the school, we heard what sounded like a full-blown rave in progress from the gym nearby.Or rather, I heard it and she felt the drums thumping: it was raining hard and I’d slipped off her processor already for the drive home (our car seat has great big ‘wings’ that surround her head for safety, and these tend to knock off the transmitter (the disk-like piece that’s attached by magnet to the implant within her head) when she turns back and forth.

So, we stepped out of the rain and took a seat on the bleachers (which was great fun for her). I tried to explain the rules, but I don’t think she got it. (Come on, Li-Li, step it up a bit, you’re practically 2!)  She did lots of hand waving with each basket scored and foul shot made, but I don’t think she followed the ref’s signs at all. And I’m sure she couldn’t tell a technical foul from an inbound violation. What a strange experience not to have the crowd cheering the action verbally. But the drums were wild!

We could only stay for a little more than a quarter before she got a bit antsy and wanted to either empty her lunchbox or make a run for the court, but we had great fun (except when the bone-shaking buzzer rang at the end of the quarters — so unbelievably loud, my ears still ring a day later).

I remember my basketball games being insanely noisy… even during pep rallys (if they still call them pep rallys) the only way I was able to follow anything was the crowd :)
